Fat Chance by Deborah Blumenthal6/10/2023 Loved by her readers for presenting a happy façade despite her own weight problems, she’s a lady with issues of her own. Overweight journalist Maggie O’Leary became screamingly popular after the genesis of her unconventional column, Fat Chance. Although it does pick up in the middle of the story, so much of the book is spent offering weight loss advice/statistics while paying lip service to the notion that it’s okay to be obese as long as you love yourself, that the actual story gets lost somewhere along the way. The debut novel of nutritionist Deborah Blumenthal it falls short of the mark owing to a slow start, an unlikable protagonist, and a choppy writing style that was hard to follow. Billed as the insightful story of a spunky columnist who crusades for acceptance of fatness and obesity in America, Fat Chance puts the spotlight on the insecurities of any woman who has every looked in a mirror and hated what she saw (and used Sara Lee as therapy).

Darwish memory for forgetfulness6/10/2023 Sinan Antoon's foreword, written expressly for this edition, sets Darwish's work in the context of changes in the Middle East in the past thirty years. Ibrahim Muhawi's translation beautifully renders Darwish's testament to the heroism of a people under siege, and to Palestinian creativity and continuity. What is the meaning of exile? What is the role of the writer in time of war? What is the relationship of writing (memory) to history (forgetfulness)? In raising these questions, Darwish implicitly connects writing, homeland, meaning, and resistance in an ironic, condensed work that combines wit with rage. It is also a journey into personal and collective memory. Memory for Forgetfulness is an extended reflection on the invasion and its political and historical dimensions. compelling book entitled Memory for Forgetfulness: Three oclock. As fighter jets scream overhead, he explores the war-ravaged streets of Beirut on August 6th (Hiroshima Day). Mahmoud Darwish was born in 1942 into a land-owning Palestinian. Mahmoud Darwish vividly recreates the sights and sounds of a city under terrible siege. One of the Arab world's greatest poets uses the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the shelling of Beirut as the setting for this sequence of prose poems.

Boris pasternak book6/10/2023 Through all of this, over the course of decades, Pasternak had worked on and off on his magnum opus, a story about a man named Yuri Zhivago and the two women he loved around the time of the Bolshevik Revolution. In 1934, Joseph Stalin himself called Pasternak to scold him for trying to get a poet friend of his released, and Pasternak's friend and lover Olga Ivinskaya was sent to the gulag for three years as a punishment to the man. His artistic, bourgeois background and beliefs quickly put Pasternak at odds with the Soviets, and he spent decades in their crosshairs. He stayed and wrote, composing poetry and novellas and translating many works into Russian to support himself. Pasternak was born in Russia before the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 to a family of artists and musicians, and unlike many of his family members and friends, he didn't flee when the Communists took over his country. The book took a twisted and dangerous path to publication in a repressive state, and the government he resisted for so long prevented him from ever seeing that prize in his lifetime. Fifty-nine years ago today, Russian author Boris Pasternak, author of "Doctor Zhivago," was awarded the Nobel Prize.

Joshua dalzelle black fleet6/9/2023 I have thoroughly loved all of the books I've read in this series. Mark Boyett does an outstanding job of narration, as always. Most of the characters carry over into the next book and next trilogy, (unless they get killed - no spoilers!). The main characters are "real" people with flaws and sometimes they make mistakes, but they have good intentions. Great character development, great characters, and plenty of war. But it does leave a thread on which the next trilogy can be built. The end of a trilogy ends the main story - not a cliff hanger. The Black Fleet books are really 3 separate trilogies that follow each other. Although it's not absolutely necessary, I strongly recommend you start with the Black Fleet Trilogy, (book 1 is called "Warship"), before listening to the 2nd or this 3rd trilogy, The Unification War Trilogy. The Black Fleet Saga continues A human planet ha Want to Read Rate it: Book 6 Destroyer by Joshua Dalzelle 4.43 2,803 Ratings 80 Reviews 5 editions A relentless enemy An old wolf's last hunt The Want to Read Rate it: Book 7 Battleground by Joshua Dalzelle 4.43 1,836 Ratings 60 Reviews 4 editions This war was inevitable. This is book 1 of the third and final trilogy in the Black Fleet Series, an excellent series of military sci-fi space opera, (The first trilogy was The Black Fleet Trilogy, the second trilogy is called The Expansion Wars Trilogy, and this is the final trilogy - The Unification War Trilogy). Excellent installment in the Blackfleet trilogy
